Hi,

Think I  saw Margaret CAVANAUGH McKENNA in your tree on Ancestry.  She was one of my great grandmothers.  Her daughter Mabel McKENNA married my grandfather Raymond KELLY.

Do we have some ancestors in common?

Hello, Mary,

I think we corresponded once before about a connection on my father's side.  Apparently we have one on my mother's side as well.  My mother (coincidentally named Mary Kelly) came from Waterloo.  My grandmother grew up in Red Oak, IA.  I am told her favorite cousin was Andrew Striegel.  I have pictures of them together when they were young.  My grandmother's mother was a Salz.  I have pictures of Nettie, too, and other Salz family members.

Yours sincerely,

Kevin Kelly

Dear Mary,

Just a quick note for now.  Had some eye surgery and a lot of work to do lately.  Also, I have been brushing up on my Salz history.  Extensive family and lots of reused names, so hard to tell the players without a good score card.  Thanks for the file.

I should have said that my grandmother was first cousin to Mark Striegel, the son of Andrew and Nett that died fairly young.  I probably do have at least one photo of Andrew as well.  I will fire up the scanner and see what I can do.  Do you have many photos of the Salz clan?  I have several.

My grandmother Margaret Rhodes was Andrew and Nett Striegel's niece.  Her mother, Mary Margreta (Rose) Salz, was three when the family immigrated from Germany and moved to Waterloo.  She married Chester Randolph Rhodes in 1883.  Chet was rebaptized as John Chester Rhodes, so I think he converted (according to a letter from one of Chet's nephews, Chet's family were Protestant).  His mother's maiden name was St. John, so that explains why he adopted the name of "Saint John".  They moved to Red Oak, IA in 1898 and spent the rest of their lives there.  My grandmother was raised at Red Oak but moved back to Waterloo after she married, and my mother met my father there.

So it seems our ancestors hung out together and a few of them married one another.  Have you been in touch with other Salz descendants?  I found out from them that there was an Illinois branch of the Salz family as well as the Iowa one.

Best wishes,

Kevin Kelly

Dear Mary,

Best wishes of the holiday season to you and your family!

I went through my grandmother's collection of photographs and found several of the Salz family.  Take a look at this list and let me know if any or all are of interest to you.  I would be happy to scan and e-mail whichever you want.

Dear Mary,

Sorry to be taking so long; things have been very busy ever since the holidays. There are lots of photos to scan, and I have found a few more sent to my by a Salz cousin named Jo Anne Andra. Have you heard of her or corresponded? She is my mother's second cousin, descended from Peter Salz and Anna Katherina (who immigrated to Iowa from Germany in 1861), through Heinrich Wilhelm Salz (Jo Anne's grandfather). Heinrich Wilhelm was brother-in-law to Anna Burchinsky.

It's been a few years since I have corresponded with Jo Anne, and I have lost her email address. The postal address I have for her is:
611 South Spruce Street
Goddard, KS 67052-9431

She sent me some nice quality photos a few years ago, and I will (eventually) scan them for you. There is a particularly fine one of Peter and Anna SALZ and seven of their children. It includes John Joseph, and so was taken before 1899, and it is minus one of the daughters.

Attached is a photo of Peter RECHTFERTIG and Ella (Anna Helena) SALZ. On the back is an engraving of a three story building (at 103 East Fourth Street in Waterloo) with horse drawn trolleys and carriages running in front of it. The photo studio was in the middle section of the building, with a hotel on the left and L. S. Parsons (pianos and organs) on the right.

Sincerely,

Kevin Kelly

I see no harm in making the photos available to all.  Attached is another -- young Mark Striegel and his mother, Nett, taken at the time of his first communion.  It was actually on the back of a post card, addressed to her niece, Marie (Mary Alice) Rhodes (sister of my grandmother).  There was no stamp, so I don't think she mailed it, but probably enclosed it with a letter.  It's just small talk -- nothing of historical significance -- but interesting to have a specimen of her handwriting.

Yes, Mark died young, of some disease.  My mother tells me he was my gradma's favorite cousin -- in photos it looks like he was a lot of fun.

Mark and Bunny in Red Oak.jpg

Here are Mark and "Bunny" Striegel.  Bunny appears in a few of my grandma's pictures, identified as either (cousin) Bunny or Bernadette.  I wonder if it was Bernadine, your grandma's sister (if I have my Striegel's straight).  Did Bernadine ever raise family?

The other fellow in the photo is identified only as Francis Miller.  Would that name ring a bell with your mother?

I am an Iowa boy, myself (born in Des Moines), but never got to know Striegel's, Rechtfertigs, Hayes, etc.  My grandmother divorced her husband (Chester Heath), who evidently treated her very badly, so I never heard much about the Salz side of life.  About all I have are the photos and the records I have been able to dig up.  Please pass on what you can of your mother's recollections.  Would she have known any of the Red Oak crowd?  My grandmother RHODES was born there, daughter of J C RHODES and Mary Margareta SALZ (not the one in the photo you sent).  J C was actually born Chester Randolph RHODES, but all his census after the marriage are John Chester, and I heard he was rebaptized.  His family was raised Protestant, so I am supposing he converted to Catholicism at marriage.  I think he selected St. John the Baptist for a new first name; his mother's maiden name was St. John.

More Striegels to follow.

My grandfather, Chester Heath, whom I never met, was also an alcoholic, and oh so charming.  He was a rat to my grandmother.  Divorce was a big deal back then, especially in the Catholic community, so my grandmother might have been branded something of a black sheep for cutting him loose.  Not fair.  Anyway, grandma fell away from the family, I think, but she kept plenty of pictures, bless her.  She was an avid bowler, made delicious bread, did pottery for a while, and had a great sense of humor.  She raised five children, all gone now except for my mother.

My Kelly family came from the Beara Peninsula in west Cork, Ireland in the 1840s.  They mined in southwestern Wisconsin and in other states (a lot of Beara immigrants did mining when they came to the US), and my great grandfather established a farm in Lincoln township of Black Hawk county.  They attended church in a place called Blessing, south of Hudson.  Many relatives are buried there, and I have seen a least a couple of Hayes stones.  Clara Hayes married John William McKenna, my grand uncle.  The McKenna's farmed near my Kelly family.  If you are curious, I can send you a Kelly history my dad compiled by interviewing his Aunt Mary Kelly (b. 1874).  GED file also available, of course.

Attached is a photo of your great grand aunt Nett (Anna Katherine) SALZ STRIEGEL, with sisters and mother (I misnamed the file).  If I am correct in how I interpret the writing on the back of the photo, the ladies in the back row are Ella RECHTFERTIG, Marguerite SALZ RHODES (my great grandmother), Nett STRIEGEL and May McLARNEN.  Seated would be the former Lizzie (Anna Elizabeth) SALZ.  This might be the occasion of her marriage to Paul GINDT, which would date the photo to Jan 1887.  I might be mistaken, though, since Nett didn't marry until March of that year, and Ella not until September.  Maybe it was some other occasion, like an anniversary.  Perhaps you can help with this one.

Sincerely,

Kevin

I had NOT mistitled the file I most recently sent you; however, I misdescribed it.  I got confused.  Obviously what I just sent was Nett Striegel and her two daughters, Rosena (Sister Mary Letice) and Agatha (Sister Mary Immacula).

I'll send the other photo later, after I move it off the computer to which my scanner is attached (an old WIndows 95 relic).

Meanwhile, attached is a photo of Paul Gindt, husband of Anna Elizabeth (Lizzie) Salz.  I believe it was taken the year before the two married.

Yours truly,

Labeled as Bunny Striegel on the back.  Same gal, I think, probably Bernadine, this time with mallet.

Some of these are kind of washed out, but I think it's the best I can do with the quality of photograph.

Here is a photo of John and Mary Salz.  Not sure who these people are -- maybe you can help.  No date on the photo so hard to tell when unless you are a fashion expert.  They do make a handsome couple, though.
